As the person experiencing the story and feeling what the character(s) feel, be as descriptive as possible (that is, show an image) when detailing what is happening. Pretend you are behind a camera writing about what you see in a way the reader can see it &#8211; with emotion, colour or anything else that is central to that scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting with the actions that display emotions is a good start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are a few examples to illustrate some emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><b>Sadness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of &#8216;telling&#8217; sadness would be you writing &#8216;I felt sad&#8217; or &#8216;I feel depressed&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These statements are not effective because they do not create any image in the reader&#8217;s mind. So, imagine how you would behave if you actually were sad. If you literally acted this out, here are some examples of what you might do:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Head down\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eyebrows furrowed\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tears in your eyes\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shoulders slumped\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have these images, then you can get a bit more creative describing them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An image that displays sadness:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy chin rested limply on my hand, as I stared at the ground and saw a salty tear drop from my eye splash in a small puddle on the ground.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Hint: See how you don&#8217;t need to be told this person is sad? You can just understand it from their body language. Similarly, we can often just tell how a person feels by looking at them, so describe what you see that indicates how they feel.]\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Exercise<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick one emotion, and write a sentence that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shows <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the emotion rather than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tells <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><\/p><p><b>Writing techniques to use in creative writing<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ol><li><b><\/b> <b>Symbolism<\/b><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMockingbirds don\u2019t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don\u2019t eat up people\u2019s gardens, don\u2019t nest in corncribs, they don\u2019t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.
