Sometimes they have strong reasoning skills. Sometimes formal assessments show they are performing at or above average levels cognitively.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet when it comes to schoolwork, the results don&#8217;t seem to match.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents often describe children who:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have lots of ideas but struggle to organise them.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand concepts verbally but can&#8217;t explain them in writing.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read well but struggle with comprehension.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform strongly in some subjects but poorly in others.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seem capable at home but underperform at school.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be frustrating for both parents and students.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Intelligence and Academic Performance Are Not the Same Thing<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents assume that if a child is intelligent, academic success should happen automatically.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t always work that way.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has consistently shown that academic achievement depends on a range of factors beyond intelligence, including executive functioning, self-regulation, motivation, organisation, and study habits (Diamond, 2013).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child may have strong reasoning skills but struggle to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan their work.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organise their thoughts.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain attention.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow multi-step instructions.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor their own errors.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, their school performance may not reflect their true ability.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Writing Is Often the Biggest Challenge<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We frequently work with students who can explain an idea perfectly in conversation but struggle to put it onto paper.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing requires students to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generate ideas.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organise information.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structure sentences.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply spelling and grammar rules.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor their work.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All at the same time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This places a significant demand on working memory and executive functioning (Graham et al., 2012).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many students, especially those with ADHD or organisational difficulties, this can be overwhelming.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Confidence Trap<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest risks is not academic.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s emotional.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students repeatedly experience difficulty, they often begin to develop beliefs about themselves.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statements such as:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m bad at maths.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not good at English.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t do writing.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can become part of their identity.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychologist Carol Dweck&#8217;s research on mindset shows that students who develop fixed beliefs about their abilities are more likely to avoid challenges and give up when learning becomes difficult (Dweck, 2006).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, confidence can become a bigger issue than the original academic gap.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Early Intervention Matters<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents tell us:<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re not looking for selective school preparation. We just want our child to be comfortable and confident.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is often exactly the right approach.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that academic gaps tend to widen over time if foundational skills are not addressed early (Stanovich, 1986).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small difficulties with:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading comprehension<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing organisation<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic numeracy<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathematical fluency<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can become much larger challenges in high school.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal isn&#8217;t perfection.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is ensuring students have the skills and confidence to keep progressing.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What Effective Support Looks Like<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effective tutoring is rarely about drilling questions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, it focuses on:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding how the student thinks.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying the specific cause of errors.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking complex tasks into manageable steps.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building confidence through success.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing guided practice and feedback.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students often don&#8217;t need more work.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They need more clarity.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a student understands exactly what to do and why they are doing it, confidence grows naturally.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child seems bright but their results aren&#8217;t reflecting their potential, it doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean they lack ability.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, it means they need support developing the skills that allow them to demonstrate that ability consistently.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the right guidance, many students begin to experience something they haven&#8217;t felt in a while:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Success.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And once students begin to experience success, confidence often follows.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>References<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diamond, A.
