Some are teachers. Some work in technical fields. Many are more than capable of helping their child academically.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet homework often turns into an exhausting battle.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue isn&#8217;t usually that parents don&#8217;t know enough.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue is that children and parents have very different relationships than students and teachers.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Homework Can Become So Emotional<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At school, a teacher asks a student to complete a task.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At home, that same request can feel very different.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children may feel:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">judged<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frustrated<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embarrassed<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defensive<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents may feel:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impatient<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worried about the future<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guilty for not helping enough<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, even simple tasks can become emotionally charged.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Year 5 maths worksheet that should take fifteen minutes can suddenly become an hour-long argument.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Problem Isn&#8217;t Usually Motivation<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents assume their child is being lazy.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, struggling students often want to succeed.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by Bandura (1997) found that a student&#8217;s belief in their ability to succeed, known as self-efficacy, has a significant impact on persistence and performance.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When children repeatedly struggle, they begin to expect failure.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of thinking:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I can work this out.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they begin thinking:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not good at this.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point, avoidance becomes a protective strategy.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why an External Tutor Can Help<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tutor provides something parents often can&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Objectivity.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tutor is not:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enforcing bedtimes<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managing behaviour<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organising school lunches<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dealing with sibling arguments<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their only role is learning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows students to engage differently.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children will happily accept guidance from a tutor that they resist from a parent.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not because the tutor is smarter.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But because the relationship is different.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Goal Isn&#8217;t Dependency<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good tutoring shouldn&#8217;t create dependence.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to help students develop:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confidence<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">independence<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resilience<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problem-solving skills<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, students begin to approach challenges with greater confidence because they have experienced success.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If homework has become a battle in your home, it doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re failing as a parent.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, it means the parent-child relationship is getting in the way of learning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the most effective thing a parent can do is step back and allow another trusted adult to take on the teaching
