Krause, 2007).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students become anxious:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working memory decreases<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concentration decreases<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problem-solving ability decreases<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, anxiety makes it harder to demonstrate what they actually know.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Confidence Comes Before Achievement<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents think:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better marks \u2192 More confidence<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, confidence and achievement often grow together.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students need opportunities to experience success.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn&#8217;t mean making work easier.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means providing the right level of challenge.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tasks should be difficult enough to promote growth, but achievable enough to create confidence.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Foundations Matter<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Years 5 and 6, mathematics becomes increasingly cumulative.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students rely on:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiplication facts<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">division strategies<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number sense<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental arithmetic<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When these foundations are weak, higher-level concepts become difficult.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution is not simply more worksheets.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution is identifying exactly where the gaps are and addressing them systematically.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What Parents Should Say Instead<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You&#8217;re just not trying hard enough.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead try:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You haven&#8217;t mastered this yet.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by Dweck (2006) shows that focusing on growth rather than ability encourages persistence and resilience.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child says they&#8217;re bad at maths, don&#8217;t panic.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement often reflects a lack of confidence rather than a lack of ability.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the right support, many students quickly discover they are far more capable than they realised.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>References<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashcraft, M.
