Simply put, inference is all about representation. When something happens, or when something is written, a student needs to ask (or be asked!) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what does this <\/span><\/i><b><i>represent<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? I have found that the word represent translates so much easier than the word infer. But the discussion is key.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Verbal Discussion Matters<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children complete reading independently.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they often miss is discussion.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students discuss a text, they learn to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">justify opinions<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explain reasoning<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify evidence<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consider alternative interpretations<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that structured discussion significantly improves comprehension outcomes (Murphy et al., 2009).<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Shift in Upper Primary<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Years 5 and 6, schools increasingly assess:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critical thinking<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">text analysis<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interpretation<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence-based responses<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are expected to move beyond simply understanding what happened.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They must explain <\/span><b><i>why <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it matters. This is where an understanding of language techniques, representation and \u2018inference\u2019 comes into play.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>How Parents Can Help<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simple questions can make a huge difference.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of asking:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Did you like the book?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Why do you think the character made that choice?&#8221;, \u201cWhat choice of words, sentence or technique in the text suggests that to you\u201d (ie. justify your choice)\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What message do you think the author wanted readers to learn?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These conversations help develop deeper thinking.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child who reads regularly has a tremendous advantage.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, reading volume alone does not automatically develop sophisticated comprehension skills.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students who thrive academically are often those who learn to think deeply about what they read, discuss their ideas, and <\/span><b>support their opinions with evidence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>References<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cain, K., &amp; Oakhill, J.
