Yet many parents sense that their child isn&#8217;t reaching their full potential.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Difference Between Performance and Effort<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One challenge in primary school is that effort can mask learning gaps.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some children work incredibly hard to achieve average results.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers may see completed work and assume everything is fine.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents, however, often see what happens at home:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homework taking hours.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tears over simple tasks.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constant reassurance needed.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resistance to reading or writing.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue isn&#8217;t necessarily the result.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s how much effort is required to achieve it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that struggling learners often expend significantly more cognitive effort than their peers to complete the same task (Sweller, 1988).<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Small Gaps Become Larger Gaps<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Year 2 student who struggles with basic sentence construction may find Year 5 writing overwhelming.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Year 5 student with weak multiplication facts may find Year 7 algebra extremely challenging.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Learning is cumulative.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each new concept builds on previous knowledge.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is sometimes referred to as the &#8220;Matthew Effect&#8221; in education, where students who develop strong foundations continue to progress more quickly, while those with gaps may gradually fall further behind (Stanovich, 1986).<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Waiting Can Be Risky<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents hope their child will simply grow out of a difficulty.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes that happens.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often it doesn&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earlier a gap is identified, the easier it is to address.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A student who receives support when they first begin struggling can often catch up quickly. A student who spends years avoiding an area may require significantly more intervention later.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Signs Parents Often Notice First<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents are usually the first to recognise when something isn&#8217;t right.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common signs include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding reading.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refusing to write.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety around homework.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of confidence.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying &#8220;I&#8217;m bad at this.&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive frustration.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These behaviours often emerge before report comments or test results reveal a problem.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes a child is genuinely falling behind.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes they are simply missing the right support.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge is knowing the difference.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that both situations can be improved when difficulties are identified early and addressed systematically.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>References<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanovich, K.
