of the skills that determine how confidently a child transitions into high school are developed years earlier.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something we hear from parents all the time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They aren&#8217;t necessarily worried about selective schools.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They aren&#8217;t expecting their child to become a maths genius.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they&#8217;re worried about is something much deeper.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;re worried their child will arrive in Year 7 and realise everyone else knows something they don&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Fear Nobody Talks About<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents often tell us:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want them stuck in the bottom classes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want them feeling like they&#8217;re behind.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want them losing confidence.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fear isn&#8217;t a bad report.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fear is watching their child stop believing in themselves.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents have seen what happens when a student enters high school with gaps in:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times tables<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading comprehension<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing structure<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisation<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Study habits<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those gaps don&#8217;t disappear.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, they become more obvious.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Year 7 Shock<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primary school teachers provide significant support.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High school is different.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students suddenly need to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage multiple teachers<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Track assessments<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organise homework<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take notes<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Study independently<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has shown that the transition to secondary school is associated with increased academic demands and can lead to declines in confidence if students feel unprepared (Akos &amp; Galassi, 2004).<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Foundations Matter More Than Acceleration<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents assume tutoring is about getting ahead.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, it&#8217;s not.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students who cope best in high school usually aren&#8217;t the students who learnt Year 8 content in Year 5.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;re the students who have:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong literacy skills<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong numeracy skills<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good organisational habits<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confidence asking questions<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience when work becomes difficult<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2><b>The Hidden Risk of &#8220;She&#8217;s Fine&#8221;<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common phrases parents hear is:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;She&#8217;s doing fine.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And often that&#8217;s true.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is a difference between coping and thriving.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many students can get through primary school with small gaps.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High school tends to expose them.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What Parents Can Do Now<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most valuable preparation is often:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading regularly<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"
